This update is to let you know the Administrative Update Master Course List has been published. A permanent link has been included in the GE and UR Interim Learning Outcomes and Criteria Master. This faculty recommended course list includes the Administrative Update Process for GE Units and UR Tags approved in Spring 2018, and the more recent Administrative Update for Ethnic Studies and the Upper Division Area D Administrative Update for former D4 courses that were already 3 or 4 units. These course lists were recommended by the appropriate curricular committees, the SCCC, and approved by the Provost’s office through Spring 2020. The courses in the master list can be used by degree programs to modify their curriculum and develop pathways in the new curricular model approved last spring.
I also want to point you to the FAQ on the Revisions to EO 1100 Revised August 23, 2017 published by the Chancellor’s Office. In particular, FAQ 7 (Page 2), which explains the organization of the 48 units of GE. This organization includes 39 units of lower-division GE and the remaining 9 units upper-division, 3 units in each of the areas B, C, and D.
There will likely be more updates this week. For example, we are working on a curricular FAQ to help address curricular issues as we resolve them.
Now that Course Consent is back online, here is another curricular update.
All course proposal forms are now available including GE Area C, UDSL, and WCL on the GE and UR Interim Learning Outcomes and Criteria Master .
Upper Division Service Learning (UDSL) will use the previous D4 outcomes for this Course Consent cycle. The UDSL course proposal form has been updated accordingly. If you are submitting a UDSL course, please contact Deb Burke, if you haven’t already.
World Culture/Language (WCL) have been formally approved by the URCC and SCCC. The criteria were revised and the WCL course proposal form has been updated. If you are submitting a WCL course, please contact Yoshiko Saito-Abbott, if you haven’t already.
Colleges, schools, divisions, and departments are doing the final vetting of the Ethnic Studies Administrative Update and the Upper Division D UDSL Administrative Update. This process will be completed by the end of business today. A list of all administratively updated courses will be made available to the campus early next week so programs can start aligning their pathways to approved courses the new curricular model.
Remember October 1 is a hard deadline for departments to submit courses to Course Consent.
Please keep in mind the GECC, URCC, and the SCCC are trying to be as supportive as possible through this process. If you have concerns or specific issues that need to be addressed, please contact your college curriculum representative, GE area representative or UR facilitator. I can also help guide you to the appropriate person, if needed.
Lastly, as we move into the part of the year where the hours of darkness outnumber the hours of daylight, please be kind to each other. Especially our staff colleagues who have the massive job of executing and coding all the curricular changes we are making.
The GE and UR Interim Learning Outcomes and Criteria Master
has been updated. The details of this particular update are further below. This master document is designed to be comprehensive. It contains or provides access to any information or materials a faculty member needs to submit a course seeking to meet a GE or University Requirement. Such information or materials include outcomes and criteria, proposal forms, and the names of people who can support course developers. The document is organized (mostly) by requirement with links to the requirement sections in the table to contents.
Below is a list of the updates to the master document since last week:
- Except for Upper Division Service Learning, all GE and University Requirement Outcomes and Criteria have been posted. Interim outcomes for Upper Division Service are forthcoming.
- Except for GE Area C, links are now included to all course proposal forms. The proposal forms for GE Area C should be available on Friday, 9/14.
- The names of all GE area representatives and UR facilitators are in located in their respective requirement section.
Please keep in mind that Departments, Schools and Divisions must submit courses to Course Consent
by October 1. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the appropriate representative or facilitator. I can also provide assistance if you’re not sure who to talk to.
Good news on the approved budget.
The final budget for the CSU included a $197.3 Million increase for the General Fund (CSU operations) and $120 million in one-time funds. Thanks to everyone who reached out to their representatives to encourage the Legislature to prioritize the CSU and increase the amount initially proposed by the Governor! Summary details can be found on p. 33-34 of the of the Legislative Budget Conference Committee Close-Out Agenda.
The Chancellor also noted two additional budget-related matters:
- $25 million this year was distributed to the campuses as increased support for tenure-track hiring.
- For the coming year, the Board of Trustees will likely ask for a $400 million increase (double the normal ask) to support increased enrollment growth and maintenance of facilities, among other needs.
New recruitment software coming
The CSU will be rolling out new system-wide software, CHRS Recruiting, to be used by hiring committees and administrative staff. The first five campuses to implement will be Fullerton San Bernardino, San Diego, Stanislaus, San Luis Obispo. One feature of the software will be real-time diversity profiles of the candidate pool so hiring committees will have the information they need to consider the broader demographics of the applicants. Recognizing CSU Centers for Community Engagement and Student Success in Service Learning and Community Engagement – *first read*
The Senate was presented with the first read of the Resolution Observing the 20th Anniversary of the CSU Centers for Community Engagement and Student Success in Service Learning and Community Engagement. This is a quite brief resolutions and the key elements are that the ASCSU encourages both the Chancellor, Board of Trustees, every campus Senate and campus President to “plan for and carry out an appropriate observation of the 20th anniversary of the CSU Center for Community Engagement.”

Addressing shared governance
In November, the Senate will be addressing the Tenets of System Level Governance in the California State University. This document is the outcome of intensive discussions between the ASCSU Executive team and the Chancellor’s Office and it outlines baseline tenets regarding how shared governance between the ASCSU and the Chancellor’s Offices should occur. These discussions and the resulting Tenets document represent ASCSU’s effort to call the Chancellor’s Office to account for breakdown in appropriate consultation around implementation of EO1100/1110.
In November, the Tenets documents comes to the floor for action. Since the Tenets documents itself represents an agreed-upon commitment by both the ASCSU Executive team and the Chancellor’s Office, it is unlikely the Tenets document itself will be modified. However, it is likely that the Tenets will be accompanied by a resolution, which can provide further commentary on behalf of the Senate.

The EO 1100 Planning Hub is no longer current and will no longer be updated, but will be available for historical purposes. For the most current information on the new CSUMB General Education and University Requirements, please go to the GE and UR Interim Learning Outcomes and Criteria Master. The General Education Curricular Committee (GECC) and University Requirements Curricular Committee (URCC) are still working on the submission forms for courses entered to Course Consent needing GE or University Requirement certification. They should be available early next week.
We know many faculty are busy developing courses for submission to Course Consent. For faculty developing courses fulfilling a GE requirement, you are encouraged to contact the relevant GE Area Representative. We also know academic programs are very busy revising their curriculum in consideration of the new curricular model and its impact on their degree program requirements. Swarup Wood has been recently hired as Interim Director for General Education; part of his charge is to help programs address these changes and/or connect them with people who can help. Programs wrestling with questions like how they’ll incorporate the new Ethnic Studies requirement into their majors, what options are coming for upper division Area B, what upper division Area C options might work best for their majors, and similar issues are encouraged to contact Swarup via email, or at x3926.

Welcome to the new blog of the Academic Senate at California State University, Monterey Bay. This blog is an experiment in improving communications from the Academic Senate to CSUMB faculty and other interested parties. The leadership of the Academic Senate receives a lot of information at both the campus and system level. Much more information than can be covered during Senate meetings or would be relevant enough to send to all faculty. This blog is meant to fill this gap.
Official communications of CSUMB’s Academic Senate will still be posted on the Academic Senate’s campus website or from the Senate’s official email account, email@example.com. This blog should not be taken as the position or as reflecting the views of the Faculty at CSUMB.
Blog posts will include campus and system-wide news and announcements, written reports and presentations received by the Senate on behalf of the Faculty, or notices of events. This blog will also be used as a way to provide context for Senate business and initiatives.
At this point in time, this blog is not meant to be a two-way communications tool. Comments, concerns, or questions should still be presented at Senate meetings, to a senate representative, to ASEC, or to the Chair of the Academic Senate.
